The US Arena Curling Championships
Great news for those of you who have been longing for some live curling to watch, even though it's July: there's live curling coming up this weekend! Live from Fort Wayne, Indiana, the inaugural United States Arena Curling Championships are being webcast by America's Leader In American Curling Webcasts, the 12th End Sports Network (TESN). Tune in starting this Thursday!
(Side note: For those unfamiliar with the concept of "Arena Curling", as opposed to curling on dedicated curling ice, that's explained here.)
The Triangle Curling Club isn't sending anyone to Fort Wayne this weekend, but as a fellow arena club (for now), we'll be taking a keen interest. We think events like this are great. For one thing, the deck is strongly stacked against any arena curlers wishing to compete for, say, the United States national championship. But a national championship restricted only to arena curlers? Sure! We can do that. Events like this also help give us arena clubs the center stage for a weekend or two, and is a great way to meet and collaborate with curlers from other arena clubs, some of whom - like us - may also be looking to build*.
(* - Speaking of which...we just started up a "crowd funding" site on Indiegogo. Check it out!)
The Grand National Curling Club, or GNCC - that's basically a consortium of all East Coast curling clubs from Maine to Florida, and of which the Triangle Curling Club is a member - started up its own annual Arena Curling Championship in 2010, and it's been a huge success. (The 4th annual GNCC Arena Club Championship is coming up in August.) Maybe in a few years, we can coordinate all of these "arena curling championships" such that each region of the United States Curling Association has their own arena club championship, with the winners advancing to the National Championship? ... On the other hand, I think we arena curlers have higher priorities, namely, trying to build our own clubs. With luck, none of us will remain as arena clubs for very long anyway.
So, good luck to everyone in Fort Wayne this weekend! While the Triangle Curling Club couldn't make it to Fort Wayne this year, you will likely be able to find us in the chat rooms during the TESN webcasts, at least.
